Schär White Bread

I went to the supermarket the other day, as I really wanted to try this loaf of gluten free bread that was on offer (I’ve never been a big fan of bread, and going gluten free hasn’t helped in that department either.)

Though I picked up my groceries at the supermarket the other day, this was my first time since the lock-down that I was brave enough to actually enter the supermarket and do my own shopping. And that was only because it was Sunday, and the shops here are usually rather quiet on Sundays. I only needed two things: that loaf of bread and some cream cheese.

I needed help with both, as both were on the highest shelf which I cannot reach from my chair. Not even when I sit on the wheel. So I just asked someone to put it on a lower shelf for me, so I could then go and grab it myself. No need for physical contact, or even close proximity.

All in all, I think it went well. I might do it again. Doing your own shopping just feels a lot better than having to depend on someone to shop for you and then deliver your groceries. Also, this way I don’t have to pay extra.

So now I had this loaf of bread, and that meant I had to try it. Was it at all palatable, or was it a total waste of money?

We’re talking about this loaf of bread: Schär Gluten Free Classic. At least, that’s what it’s called in The Netherlands – and in Germany, I’d wager. I looked it up, and in the UK it’s called Wholesome White Loaf, and in the US Artisan Baker White Bread. And, at least in the US, it’s prohibitively expensive.

Sorry lads and ladies. I didn’t make this shit up.

(Also, I’m not affiliated with Schär – or any retailer selling their products – and will not be rewarded in any way for this review. This is very much my own, unbiased opinion.)

Test number 1: Look, feel, smell

It looks like white bread. Feels soft and not dry at all. No offending smells either. Even though it has sourdough in it.

Test number 2: PB Sandwich

Slather some peanut butter on a slice of bread. Eat. Tastes good. Has a good mouthfeel too.

Test number 3: Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Make a grilled cheese sandwich. Eat. Aaaaaah! Heavenly goodness! Delicious!

The Verdict

A resounding YES. I’ll definitely buy that bread more often. Even though my sister hates it. I actually like it.

Serving Tip:

Tastes even better with my Sweet Chili Sauce
